Project Gravity
The apartment, situated in a duplex within a historic conservation building in Tel Aviv, was designed with a young family in mind. The parents run their own sunglasses design business and requested a display area for their products that would be easily accessible from the entrance for visiting customers. Additionally, they wanted a workspace that overlooks the main living area, enabling them to keep an eye on their children while they work.
Design Language
The couple mentioned their family's passion for science fiction and outer space, which inspired the "gravity in space" concept for the design. To develop this idea, the studio researched the weights of various materials and discovered that the lightness of metals could be used to create a sense of floating elements. This led to the design of walls that appear to levitate, a sunglasses display suspended from the ceiling of the workspace, and other unique, engaging features that evoke the feeling of weightlessness.
The Show Room
The glasses display area is positioned directly below the workspace and is defined as a distinct feature cut from the floor, accentuated by integrated lighting. The display stands are suspended from the ceiling of the workspace by metal rods at varying heights. This setup creates individual platforms for each model, encouraging customers to walk around and explore the different styles.
Dining & Kitchen
Round lighting fixtures hang at varying heights, enhancing the sense of depth and dimension. Dining chairs with transparent enamel bases create an illusion of levitation, while a slender dining table appears to float above the floor. The resin flooring unifies the space with a smooth, flowing design that seamlessly connects the different areas.
Kitchen & Living
The kitchen features a sleek combination of stainless steel and wood cabinetry. The tall cabinets not only divide the central space but also double as furniture for the family living room, incorporating media and television units. The kitchen boasts a stainless steel island, with an open, stylish ceiling design above it, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics. Adjacent to the island is a hanging seating area that facilitates interaction with the cook, making the kitchen a more social and engaging space.
